How to Change the HEPA Filter in Your Vacuum Cleaner
HEPA filters trap fine dust, allergens, and other microscopic particles, helping your vacuum do a better job of cleaning and improving indoor air quality. Over time, these filters can become clogged and lose effectiveness — so regular replacement is important.
Here’s how to change a vacuum cleaner’s HEPA filter:
Step 1: Turn Off and Unplug the Vacuum
Always unplug your vacuum before performing maintenance to ensure safety.
Step 2: Locate the HEPA Filter Compartment
HEPA filters are usually located at the back or side of the vacuum, behind a removable cover. Some models place the filter near the exhaust vent or inside a rear housing.
Step 3: Open the Filter Cover
Release the latches, tabs, or screws to open the filter compartment. Take care not to force anything, as covers are usually designed to open with minimal pressure.
Step 4: Remove the Old HEPA Filter
Carefully pull out the old filter. It may be dusty or discolored from use. Dispose of it in a sealed bag to prevent debris from escaping back into the air.
Step 5: Insert the New HEPA Filter
Unwrap the new filter and place it in the same orientation as the old one. Most filters are designed to fit one way only, so make sure it's seated properly and snugly.
Step 6: Close the Filter Compartment
Replace the filter cover and make sure it is fully secured. Listen for any clicks or snaps that indicate the cover is locked into place.
Step 7: Plug In and Test the Vacuum
Plug the vacuum back in and turn it on to make sure it’s running normally. If your vacuum has a filter change indicator, reset it per your user manual.
