How to Change Your Car’s Engine Air Filter
The engine air filter keeps dirt, dust, and debris from entering your engine. A clean filter helps your car run efficiently and can improve fuel economy and performance. Fortunately, replacing it is a quick and easy DIY task.
Here’s how to change it:
Step 1: Turn Off the Engine and Pop the Hood
Make sure the engine is off and cool. Open the hood and locate the air filter housing — typically a black plastic box near the front or side of the engine bay, connected to a large air intake hose.
Step 2: Open the Air Filter Housing
Most air filter housings are secured with clips, screws, or bolts. Use your hands or a screwdriver to release the cover. Set the cover and any fasteners aside.
Step 3: Remove the Old Filter
Lift the old air filter out of the housing. Take note of how it fits and which way the pleats are oriented. If the housing is dusty, wipe it out with a clean rag or use a vacuum.
Step 4: Install the New Air Filter
Place the new filter into the housing in the same orientation as the old one. It should sit flat and snug, with the rubber edge forming a seal.
Step 5: Reattach the Housing Cover
Replace the housing cover and secure any clips, screws, or bolts you removed earlier. Make sure everything is sealed tightly to prevent unfiltered air from entering the engine.
Step 6: Close the Hood and You're Done
Close the hood securely. You’ve successfully changed your engine’s air filter!
