In some cases, customers may see multiple pending charges on their online credit card statement. This doesn't necessarily mean that multiple orders have been processed.
Usually, this is because the customer has attempted a transaction that has been declined by the credit card company / financial institution.
There are a number of reasons that a charge might be declined:
1). General decline
2). Billing address provided does not match billing address of cardholder
3). The card number and CVV security code do not match
When a customer sees a pending charge as a result of a decline – the bank will actually capture and hold funds temporarily for us until we claim them. While the funds are on hold, they are not available to the customer.
The good news - we don’t actually come back and claim the funds in these cases and so the pending transactions expire and disappear. Banks have individual policies on how long they will hold money for a merchant. Some banks hold money for just one day, but a 72-hour hold is fairly standard.
If the merchant does not request its money by the end of the hold period, the hold "falls off" and the money related to the transaction once again shows as available in the customer’s account balance.
