Keeping your pool water clean and clear starts with regular filter maintenance. Cartridge-style pool filters should be cleaned every few weeks during heavy use and replaced every 1–2 seasons, depending on usage, water quality, and manufacturer recommendations.
Step-by-Step: Changing Your Pool Filter Cartridge
- Turn off the pool pump and power supply
Always shut off the pump and ensure the system is depressurized before opening the filter housing. - Relieve system pressure
Open the air relief valve (usually located on top of the filter canister) to release any built-up pressure. - Open the filter housing
Remove the clamp, lid, or bolts that secure the filter housing. Be sure to follow your system’s specific instructions. - Remove the old cartridge
Carefully lift out the old filter cartridge. Take note of its size and orientation to help with installation of the new one. - Clean the housing
Rinse out any debris or buildup inside the canister using a garden hose or damp cloth. - Install the new filter cartridge
Insert the new cartridge into place, ensuring it is seated properly and aligned as needed. - Reassemble the housing
Replace the lid, clamp, or bolts and tighten securely. Make sure the O-ring or gasket is clean and properly positioned to prevent leaks. - Restart the system and check for leaks
Turn the pump back on and slowly open the air relief valve to let out any trapped air. Once water sprays steadily, close the valve and inspect for any leaks.
